Food Photography in Bowness on Windermere : Capturing the Flavour at Vinegar Jones
There’s something timeless and comforting about a great plate of fish and chips—especially when you’re enjoying them in the heart of the Lake District. I recently had the pleasure of providing food photography in Bowness on Windermere for Vinegar Jones, a much-loved fish and chip shop located just a stone’s throw from the water in Bowness-on-Windermere.
They’re known for their classic fish and chips, but they also offer a tasty selection of burgers, scampi, and other fried favourites. With seating available upstairs, Vinegar Jones is the perfect place to refuel after a walk along the lake, or to sit in and enjoy a hearty meal with a view.

Food Photography in Bowness on Windermere : Behind the Fryer – A Story Told in Stills
This shoot was all about capturing the real essence of a working chippy—bustling behind the scenes, hot oil crackling, and golden batter fresh from the fryer. One of my favourite shots shows a member of staff mid-service, adding vinegar to a double portion of fish and chips that looked like it came straight from a seaside postcard.
There’s an honest, no-nonsense quality to places like Vinegar Jones, and I wanted the images to reflect that—crispy textures, rich colour, and that unmistakable steam rising off freshly-cooked food. Whether it was the fryer in action or the kitchen team working with efficiency and pride, I aimed to preserve the energy and heat of the kitchen without losing the clarity of each frame.

Fish, Chips—and Then Some
While fish and chips were the stars of the show, the menu at Vinegar Jones goes beyond the expected. I also photographed their cheeseburger, nestled in a soft bun with melted cheddar, crisp lettuce and tomato, styled in natural light to bring out those rich tones and textures. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s the kind of burger that grabs your attention—and I wanted the photo to do exactly that.
Another favourite from the session was a close-up of their beautifully crisp fish served with a wedge of lemon. It’s the small details that matter: the golden batter, the light catching the lemon’s translucent edge, the softness of the chips underneath. These are the visual cues that trigger hunger—and nostalgia.

A Seat with a View
What makes Vinegar Jones a little different from your average chip shop is the upstairs seating area. It’s a great spot to sit down with a tray of hot food and enjoy a relaxed view over Bowness’s bustling streets. From a photography perspective, this also meant an opportunity to show the customer experience—the presentation of the food, the comfort of the setting, and the kind of moments that make people come back.

Food Photography that Works for Your Business
As with all my commercial food photography work, the goal here was more than just making food look good—it’s about telling the story of the business. From the moment the order is placed to the first bite at the table, I aim to create images that connect with real customers.
For Vinegar Jones, that meant showing:
- The freshness of the food
- The hard work and craft in the kitchen
- The clean, welcoming environment
- The appeal of both takeaway and dine-in options
Whether you’re running a restaurant, café, or takeaway, great photography brings your menu to life—and helps attract customers online and in person.
